We are aware that a referral to the oral surgeon’s office can be an intimidating experience and can be associated with a lot of anxiety. Our office team is highly experienced, and we understand the importance of guiding you every step of the way to help ensure you have a safe and positive experience at our office.
General Anesthesia & IV Sedation
At the initial visit, we will evaluate the patient’s medical history and current health. Only patients who are healthy or have minimal health risks will receive general anesthesia in the office. For those at increased risk, treatment in the hospital may be more appropriate. We will educate the patient, review the differences between the types of anesthesia, and answer any of your questions and concerns.
During anesthesia in the office, our patients are monitored just as they would be in a hospital operating room. Our team is trained to support the doctor during anesthesia, should complications occur. They also assist in monitoring the patient during the recovery period. Our patients are kept in the recovery area until fully awake and ready to walk out the door. We use intravenous sedation and general anesthesia techniques that were developed to help ensure safe, as well as comfortable, office-based procedures.
Platelet-Rich Fibrin
An option that may be presented to you during your initial visit here at Advanced Oral Surgery, Bakersfield is the use of PRF (platelet-rich fibrin.)
Platelet-rich fibrin permits the body to take advantage of the normal healing pathways at a greatly accelerated rate. During the healing process, the body rushes many cells and cell-types to the wound to initiate the healing process. One of those cell types is platelets. Platelets perform many functions, including the formation of a blood clot and release of growth factors (GF) into the wound. These growth factors function to assist the body in repairing itself by stimulating stem cells to regenerate new tissue. The more growth factors released and sequestered into the wound, the more stem cells are stimulated to produce new tissue. Thus, PRF permits the body to heal faster and more efficiently.
PRF can be used to aid bone grafting for dental implants. This includes bone grafts, sinus lifts, and ridge and augmentation procedures. It also assists in the repair of bone defects created by the removal of teeth, or small cysts and repair of fistulas between the sinus cavity and mouth.
Advantages of PRF
- Safety:
PRF is a by-product of the patient’s own blood, therefore, disease transmission is not an issue. - Convenience:
PRF can be generated in the doctor’s office while the patient is undergoing an outpatient surgical procedure such as the placement of dental implants. - Faster healing:
The supersaturation of the wound with PRF, and thus growth factors, produces an increase of tissue synthesis and faster tissue regeneration. - Cost effectiveness:
Since PRF harvesting is done with only a small amount of blood in the doctor’s office, the patient will not incur the expense of the harvesting procedure like in a hospital or at a blood bank. - Ease of use:
PRF is easy to handle and actually improves the ease of application of bone substitute materials and bone grafting products by making them more gel-like.
