A torus (tori when there are more than one), is a small bone growth in the mouth. These growths are usually found on the roof of the mouth, inside the lower jaw and near the upper molars on the cheek. While tori are harmless and will not impact your oral health or your ability to eat and speak, they can cause irritation over time if not removed.

Depending on the location and size of the tori, you may experience irritation when eating hard or hot foods. If you have large tori or multiple tori, you may also find that it becomes difficult for you to speak and eat with ease. Tori also make it impossible to wear dentures or other oral appliances, due to discomfort and irritation.

Tori typically go unnoticed until they begin to cause irritation. Tori are usually diagnosed by a dentist during a routine dental exam. After diagnosis, the growth will need to be removed in order to alleviate irritation and restore your normal level of comfort and your quality of life. Tori require a surgical procedure to remove. Our oral surgeon will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible during this procedure and provide you with post-op instructions to help you heal and recover after the removal.
